The Accounting Society is a professional student-run organization that benefits accounting majors and students interested in accounting-related fields. Throughout the year, we schedule numerous firm/company-sponsored events at which professionals make presentations about a specific topic of interest. Topics may include resume building, interview tips, mock interviews, and business etiquette. The Accounting Society provides students with the opportunity to network with recruiters and other professionals from the firms/companies at these events. This provides students with valuable information about the firms as well as opportunities, for example, to receive invitations to these firms' summer leadership programs, obtain internships, or to receive full-time job offers.
In addition, the Accounting Society holds social and service events at which students network with their fellow peers in a comfortable atmosphere. Service events are co-sponsored with a firm/company to volunteer for the support of a particular cause. These service events also provide a more informal networking environment with the professionals. For example, in April 2016, members of the Accounting Society helped the homeless in Philadelphia through providing sandwiches and clothing with the support of the KPMG. We are looking forward to doing a similar event this spring.

HISTORY
The Accounting Society was originally organized as the Accounting Club during the fall semester of 1950, at the initiative of Professor G. Kenneth Nelson, and with the support of Professor James Lordeman. At the initial meeting the Club claimed 30 members. During the first semester the Club held three business meetings.
Dr. G. Kenneth Nelson was known as Ken to his colleagues, and was fondly known as “GK” to most students. He served in the capacity of faculty advisor of the Accounting Club for its first eight years as a recognized student organization on the University Park campus, and was succeeded by Dr. Richard Colwell in Fall, 1958. “GK” also served as faculty advisor from 1977/78 to 1993/94 – an incredible commitment on the part of Professor Nelson given that he retired in 1986.
In 2004, at the initiative of then-President Patrick Duffy, the name of the Accounting Club was changed to the Accounting Society. Patrick Duffy served as President for two years, 2003/04 and 2004/05.
